What is Farrow & Ball's most popular color and why?

It's Skimming Stone, a light gray that's almost white. The soft, subtle light gray can be used anywhere you would consider white. Far from looking spartan, it can add character and depth to even the simplest of spaces.

“The most important aspect of using color in 2021 is creating spaces that make our friends and family feel warm and welcoming, colors that make our homes proud. The strong colors suit the spaces we use at the end of the day when we want to relax and feel good”, advises Joa Studhome, farrow and ball(opens in new tab)Farbkurator.

It's Farrow & Ball's most popular neutral shade—not too hot, not too cold, and it works in any room, regardless of its orientation. It has a very subtle gray tone that only stands out if you like to combine it with a lighter whiteall white(opens in new tab).

'Amonite(opens in new tab)it has a fantastically understated quality,” says Joa. “Its subtle gray tones create a calm and relaxing feel. A lighter version of everyone's favorite Cornforth White, it's great for woodwork and ceilings combined with darker walls.”

The beauty of ammonite is that it works on both old and new land, which is one reason for its popularity. Farrow & Ball recommends their "White and Light Shades" foundation and primer for best results.

Blue instead of black, Railings is a softer alternative to black that is particularly suited to the hardware it takes its name from. The blue nuances of this dark hue transform spaces into spectacular and enveloping interiors. We love this color in study rooms and dining rooms, where it's wonderful to add character and atmosphere.

Joa share whyhandrail (opens in new tab)Is a good choice. “Despite its intense hue, railing is extremely versatile and can be used throughout the house, both on walls and in joinery. Its charm comes from being blue instead of black, and it's the perfect softer alternative to pure black. Yes, it's dramatic, but you can make this color pop in a room by pairing it with midtone wood, gray accessories, and some nice textures.

A dark tan gray, Down Pipe has light blue undertones that deepen the finish's complexity. "Originally inspired by the paint used to paint gutters and downspouts, it has been embraced with fanatical passion for use in the home," say the paint experts at Farrow & Ball. We think it contrasts beautifully with Farrow & Ball's bright, neutral tones.

'eternally popular, down tube(opens in new tab)it can be used in many ways at home”, says Joa. “It was adopted as a preferred color for heavier accent walls and intimate living rooms, as well as in woodwork to give it a slightly rough industrial feel. It has an unusual softness, which means it is rarely overbearing."

If you are worried that this color will look too dark, remember that you can add white wood which would look stunning and a white ceiling, the contrast alone would make a fabulous statement.

This dark blue is named after the beach in Norfolk, where the mud and cockles are a particular shade of deep marine blue. While traditional in feel, Stiffkey Blue is often used as an alternative to downpipe to create a dramatic space with a more contemporary finish.

'dark blue(opens in new tab)manages to be dramatic and upbeat, and has a slightly less complicated feel than other heavy blues,” says Joa. It maintains a charismatic hue due to its incomparable depth of color, but has a younger, less sophisticated feel, creating spaces that are a little more cheerful than other shades of blue. Its cool hue lends itself to both busy spaces and places to relax after a long day.”
